In tact, the reading ' out proceste of the tariff reform Repub licans has "already begugas is evidenc ed by the following editorial from the Moravian Falls (N. a) Yellow Jacket: Of all the funny two legged animals that chew tobacco and walk on the fork ed end those tariff reform Republicans take the lead. By demanding tariff re form they actually take the position that it is necessary to destroy a part of our prosperity to prevent the Democrats from destroying it alls Reader, do you belong to that class of monstrosities? If you do, the proper place for you to-trot is right over Into the Democratic camp. All you lack of being a "good Democrat" Is a tag and a tin rooster in your hat. Very much of that sort of rancorous jabber will land hundreds of thousands of the. most intelligent and patriotic Republicans i-the i)emocratic camp. Perhaps they will come to us this year. The Race War In Ohio. i I once asserted in these letters that the only reason why more negroes are lynched down south than up north is because there are more of them to lynch in the southern states. The .events of the last two or three years lead me to bejieve'that more negroes are roughly handled north of the Ohio river, in proportion to' thjeir total num bers residing in that tegion, than south of it The most serious anti-Ethiopian riots that ever occurred in this country have been in Illinois, Indiana and Ohio. The latest outburst was in Springfield, O., where a mob of 2,500 white men assaulted the jail, shot a I negro, Richard Dixon, to death, and then proceeded against the Africans in their local habitat, burning, them out of their homes. Curiously enough, it is among the people of the north, who show so much pious horror when a negro is lynched down south, that the most bitter racial hatred crops out, and generally with less provocation than in that class of cases for-which lynching Is the customary punishment in the south. True,- the killing of a policeman in Ohio is a dastardly crime, but how many white men have been lynched in the north for it? And if it were the crime and v the individual criminal against whom this assault was levied, why should the mob assault-the entire local representation of the negro race? This is "not custom ary in the south. It Is the crime-rather than the color, for the negroes of the south frequently, join their white neighbors in the punishment of the guilty one?. Altogether t it seems to me that there is more racial hatred in the north for the black man than in the south. " ' A Novel Convention Caper. J If it be true, as the poet Cowper hath itythat Variety's the very spice of llie, That gives it all its flavor, then the Republican convention re cently held in the Ninth congressional district of Missouri, which district I have the honor to represent, must have . . , . Jl., ' . been a most -delightful, not to say ec static, function. One of the twain of delegates elected to the natiorfSl con vention is onerof.ray mosr highly es teemed Republican, constituents, a most estimable citizen barring Jus naughty politics, my personal friend for more than a quarter of a century, Hem. Taylor Frier. -He- was called upon for a speech by the delegates who had just elected him to go to Chicago and who had instructed him to vote for. Colonel Roosevelt - after . he gets there; but,- to the amazement of the aforesaid delegates, ; he -- modestly de clined 'to mSke -a-speech, which en titles him to Imperishable renown, as perhaps he is the only Missouri poli tician of any party that ever .declined such "an invitation since the Indiana were -driven out of that Imperial com mon wealth. ' While the dnmf ounded delegated were pinching themselves- to see u tney were awase, Jiner. aston ished them still more by singing a solo of his own compositions entitled "Mis souri."' . Tne - nanner-JNews or . t. Charles, where the solo was rendered, says, 'The convention, joined in the chorus, -which was something unique,' I should aay it was unique for. the Kerens Republicans and the Akina Re publicans of Missouri to join' in any thins --- except-a Kilkenny ? cat. ffght The Banner-News : adds and ' it must be true foftit.laa' veracious and rell able Democratic" paper, bright, as .a new silver dollarand entirely up to datethat""after the solo the conven- I .. .,' . ..i.-- j. a.-. non adjourn ea in. great wu xiuiuur.
